In May 2000, Paul Fleming of the CAA announced to those attending an AGL Seminar in the UK that it will be mandatory for the light output from all the runway centre line lights to be between 100% and 150% of their design specification. This change in interpretation of the regulations is be implemented by 1/1/2003.

Airfield Lighting Systems has been looking for possible ways in which to help operators who have difficulty in meeting these requirements. If all the lenses have been cleaned, the lamp is in good condition and the isocandela diagram shows that the beam orientation is correct, then the only way to increase the light output is to increase the current to the lamp.

In order to increase, or decrease, the current by a small amount, Airfield Lighting Systems has designed a series of small boosters and snubbers that will fit between the plug and socket in a secondary cable. A 1%, or 66mA, change in current close to 6.60A represents a brilliancy, or light output change of 5%, so by fitting a 4% booster the current will be increased by only 264mA but the light output increases by about 20%, a very significant difference.

In use, it is proposed that each airfield lighting workshop would carry a stock of boosters and snubbers on the shelf. If, after all the normal maintenance has been carried out, the light output from a particular fitting is still below the requirements, then the most suitable booster would be fitted.

Some time later, perhaps for another reason entirely, this particular light fitting may be changed and another one put in its place. The replacement light fitting may not need the booster, in which case it would be removed and put back on the shelf until needed again in another place.
